FLYING IN :

I stopped in at Durant, Oklahoma this past weekend. I've been there a few times before - mostly for the cheap gas - but never stayed long enough to try out the restaurants. This time I was just puttering around on a Sunday so I grabbed their crew car (a very decent Ford Taurus) and headed into town.

As soon as you exit the airport road and turn right into town you'll see the new Choctaw Indian Casino that is almost completed (as of 02/05/2006). Looks like Durant will be a very popular place soon. Airport Road is exactly 1 mile in length from the FBO to the highway and .2 miles to the casino entrance. I predict that it will soon have the airport ramp filled with jets and other nice turboprops. :-)

There is a college with an aviation program on field. Watch for student pilots and training aircraft. Durant is on the same CTAF frequency as Rockwall (where I'm based). I can hear student pilots frequently calling in the pattern so be aware of possible heavy student pilot activity when you come into the area.

There isn't much open on Sunday. Most of the restaurants are closed but there were some interesting looking options on the highway into town (if you come on any other day) There's a Bar and Grill about a mile up on the left and a cajun restaurant on the right as you enter the town of Durant.

If neither of these places look good to you (or they're closed), take a left on Main St. when you get into town and keep going west. If you continue under Hwy. 75, you'll come to a packed entertainment/dining area. I ate at the Chilli's (which has just been open for a week) and had a nice lunch.

Durant doesn't have anything within walking distance but the FBO has a nice crew car that can easily sit 5. Make sure that you put a little gas in the car or buy a little fuel at the FBO. Fuel was $2.85 a gallon for 100LL when I was there - not a bad price.

Soon enough, the casino will be open. There are a wide variety of restaurants in the area and the runway is wide and long. It was a nice place to stop.

Went back to Durant for lunch today. Fuel is still cheap.

I took the crew car and went 1 1/2 miles away from the FBO to the Choctaw Indian Casino. Momma's Kitchen is good buffet food that is filling - good for casino food at least...

After a good lunch I sat down at the Blackjack table and was $158 ahead when I quit. A $100 hamburger that didn't cost me a cent!

Durant has a lot of options. If you're a gambler, the casino is only a little over a mile away. You can also drive another 3-4 miles into town and have lots of options.

Durant, Oklahoma - a GREAT flyin place that's just over the border from Sherman, TX. The runway is long and wide, the fuel is cheap and there are lots of options.

I went back to Durant last Friday. It was time for a new place.

Before I went to the casino :-), I headed into town to try a new eating place. There was a cajun place on the right as you get into town and I wanted to try it out.

Well... it turned out that the place had changed to a family-style restaurant. The food was still good but I'd had my heart set on cajun food. I had the hamburger steak with onions. It was pretty good.

When you go to Durant, you need to try Gia Como's.

Its terrific Italian food, on the north side of the casino (there's an old sign that says "steakhouse" on the side of the building)

Gamble and have terrific Italian food.

I'm thinking about flying up to DUA some night. Does anyone know if the casino will send a shuttle to the airport?

Yep. They'll take easy money anywhere they can find it. I'm sitting at our farm (in 0/0 fog) this morning, exactly 2 miles east of the airport.

Thank you! Sounds like another easy destination from KTKI (and also an x-c if I route through 3F7)!

Durant was one of my stops on my long XC route. Nice airport and runway for us small guys.

It was my first night XC -- KTKI - F46 - KDUA - KTKI. Choctaw is a hard landmark to miss at night.

A friend of mine is a degenerate gambler and a high-end customer of the casino (free rooms, etc.), so I promised I'd take him up -- I'm not the casino type at all, but it's a chance to log some XC time and get free food.
